Many international visitors can link a supported overseas Visa, Mastercard, or other eligible card in Alipay, subject to identity checks, issuer approval, and current app rules. Install the official app, finish verification, and test a small payment before you fly.
Can tourists use WeChat Pay with an international card?
Many overseas visitors can register WeChat, complete the required identity checks, and link a supported international card. Card brands, limits, fees, and issuer approval can change, so follow the current in-app terms and keep Alipay or another payment method ready as a backup.
Alipay vs WeChat Pay for tourists—which should I set up first?
Set up Alipay first for most short trips: the English flow is usually clearer for payments, transit mini-programs, and foreign-card linking. Add WeChat Pay as the second wallet when you also need messaging with hotels or local contacts, or when a merchant prefers WeChat. Keep a physical bank card and some RMB for gaps. Both apps typically work on mainland networks without a VPN; your map and messaging apps are a separate connectivity problem.
Do I still need cash or a bank card?
Yes—bring a backup card and a modest amount of RMB. Mobile pay covers most everyday buys, but cash and a second method protect you from a weak connection, account review, or a shop that cannot take your wallet.
